I've been slowly working my way through renewing furniture in my house -- see related post here about candidates for renewal. BEFORE: This is a great little dresser, but the color was a little too primary for my taste, and there were missing and mismatched hardware. AFTER: I painted it a butter yellow and added new hardware. Close-up on the knobs that I found at World Market. And a close-up on the new brushed nickel pulls I found on Amazon. This was the hardest part -- the size was an irregular 2 1/2 instead of standard 3 inches.

I always wished that I had learned to sew. I mean, I know how to replace a button or patch a tear, but I always drool over the homemade items on Pinterest. Well, maybe Zoe and I can learn together, if she takes to it. I started with a toddler sewing kit idea that was orginally based on a post I saw on Pinterest from Childhood 101. I've adapted it with some ideas of my own.
SUPPLY LIST FOR THIS PROJECT: Embroidery hoop Non-slip shelf mat with large holes (Target) Plastic embroidery needle Yarn Parmesan shaker Popsicle sticks Electrical tape Pipe cleaners Beads with large holes Felt Felt board Container to store all supplies See other three Pin-Tested projects here. Vicks stopped making the vapor shower pucks that soooo helped with allergies and congestion. I ran across a pin on Pinterest that described how to make your own pucks at home. You know, it's hit or miss with me with things I've found on Pinterest, but this one really did turn out. (That's my batch above!)
You can find the original link here. I recommend using the baking method she updated her blog with. My first batch (just drying overnight) was more crumbly than the second batch (baked.) I'm thinking about making them next time in mini muffin pans and giving as gifts! If you make them, let me know how they turn out! Read, Reading, Plan to Read I just finished The Night Circus by Erin Morganstern. This is one of those books you wish you could erase your memory and start again fresh, because it is so magical and delightful as it unfolds. I'm currently Blake Mycoskie's book Start Something That Matters. This was a holiday gift from my friend and co-worker Melissa. Meeting Blake is on my bucket list. Next, I'll choose a book from my Shelfari shelf. What are you reading? Family Activities I am planning to make this super-cute "dart" game for Zoe over the Christmas break. You can find instructions for making this here. Templates and Tools Have you seen this great blog called Merriment? I wanted to share some great kid organization ideas from her recent post. Useful for so many organizational projects!) I've taken pictures of the first wave of furniture makeovers I'd like to do in the next two quarters. Now that the weather has finally broken, I can get out on the back porch to do some painting. Here are some treatments I've found on the web that I admire: Here are pieces of furniture in my home that will need a makeover: And here are some of my favorite paint colors and fabrics: I would really, really like some advice on this set of furniture makeovers. Can you help me match the old with the new idea? Please leave a comment!

The color I'm admiring these days is vintage teal. Perhaps it is because I have some of my grandmother Ruth's beautiful teal china, and she reminds me of everything lovely and done well. Below are some other applications of this gorgeous color. What my RSS Reader Brought Me this Week Candy Chang likes to make cities more comfortable for people. Thematic Cooking I came across these beautiful loteria cards by Rowen Tree Design, and these Mexican bingo cards would be a great idea to plan one menu a week around. http://www.etsy.com/listing/69143374/loteria-cards-entire-set-54-cards-7?utm_source=googleproduct&utm_medium=syndication&utm_campaign=GPS Templates & Tools In my ongoing attempt to be a bilingual person, I have taken a crack at translating my shopping list items from English to Spanish. I am admiring these placemats and napkins from Home and Garden Art and these coffee mugs from Target. I stumbled across this post about 24 Free Splash Pads in Austin from the fabulous Free Fun in Austin website. (http://www.freefuninaustin.com) I think we'll take Zoe to the one at the Triangle and enjoy the farmer's market as well. After staying the night in a hotel last week (what a luxury for a new mom) I'm thinking that blackout curtains will help Zoe get to bed at a reasonable hour this summer. I'm wondering if Austin artist Lisa Marie Concannon from luluxo will accept a commission to upcycle our tshirts and baby clothes into one of her amazing creations? I've started our diving/family packing list which you're welcome to download and personalize. |
